Demons of Gadara is a haunting and realistic suspense thriller. Set against a backdrop of the next intertwined Middle East crisis, a U.S. Special Agent assigned overseas happens upon a terrorist plot. Two terrorists are sent to Europe with plans to detonate a “dirty bomb” at an international economic summit that will also be attended by the President of the United States. The Agent simultaneously battles the bureaucracy while racing to intercept the attack. His only clue is to follow an underground “value trail.” The first novel to focus on terrorist finance, Demons of Gadara is written with passion and authenticity. By telling a compelling story, important issues are surfaced that must be confronted in our on-going War on Terror.

This novel, "Demons of Gadara," is a pleasure filled with action, adventure, and a perspective on terrorism that rings true (because, i suspect, this author knows-of-the reality of what he speaks). Frankly, I frequently read espionage, thriller, adventure, detective and science fiction novels for fun, relaxation, and to take my mind to another place without any real expectation of learning something or perceiving the world a new way. Normally, once I put the book down... I'm done. This book capture my desire for adventure/action while also teaching me a few things about how the world of trade and finance and counter-terrorism really work. Heroes are villains, villains are sometimes sincere, and the world is a complex place."Demons of Gadara" was recommended by a friend and it caught me by surprise. It had the elements I liked (story, hero, villain, pathos, triumph). Having said that, the people and the action ring so very true that there is much about the book which sticks with me in small and large ways that gave me some new perspectives. I strongly recommend the book to readers of adventure novels, spy stories, and the like and you'll be surprised that other aspects of the book may stick with you (in a good way). If you're a government official or someone actively engaged in trying to understand the movements of money or goods around the world, you've probably already been told to buy books from John Cassara. In any case, you'll get to have a captivating adventure story that gives you a new perspective on current events that will enhance your discussions with friends around the campfire...

Demons of Gadara John A Cassara 9781483960098 Books Reviews
I normally don't read thrillers but this book was recommended to me.
Not only is Demons a continuous adventure story, it gave me insights into the inner workings of government bureaucracies and where they go right and where they go wrong. I hope this is not how our government is protecting us from terrorism, fraud, money laundering, etc. I hope that the public, agency workers, and elected officials read this important book.
As for the story itself, I found it to be exciting, compelling, well written. I do wonder if the author, in real life, experienced much about what he writes about here? I'm guessing that he has. I'm guessing he has been burned by frustration with inept management at critical government agencies. Which makes this U.S. taxpayer slightly nervous. I truly learned a lot by reading this so-called novel. Good job, Mr. Cassara.
Written as a sort of cross between text book and political thriller, Demons of Gadara tells a fairly compelling story about an Islamist terrorist plot to detonate a dirty bomb in Europe during an economic summit. As a novel, it's a mixed bag. The characters on both sides are pretty sympathetic and real. As it is more a case study than a story in the traditional sense, there's very little sense of resolution. The pseudo-text book nature makes for somewhat contrived dialogue; perhaps unavoidably, characters spend a great deal of time explaining things to one another. The suspense and tension build very well to the end.
Its weaknesses as a novel are generally tied directly to its strengths as a teaching tool, however. Through exposition and that same stilted dialogue, we learn at least a little about an awful lot, from modern shipping practices to the Sunni-Shi'a split to invoice fraud and other trade-based money laundering schemes to hawala/hundi to (unfortunately) the all-too-realistic bureaucratic grit in the gears of inter-governmental law enforcement investigation.
Editing missed a few things, notably a duplicated phrase here and there phrase here and there, and maybe a few places where things could be tightened up (or rearranged a little to keep from slowing down the narrative at key points). Overall, very well written and enjoyable.
As a novel, 3 stars. Adding a subplot or two to expand character development would do wonders, I think, though it might distract from the teaching aspect; this may have been a conscious decision on the part of the author and I won't say it was a bad one. As a teaching tool about money laundering, terror finance, and some of the centuries-old motivators and tools behind these things, 5 stars. If you want to know the nitty gritty details about terror finance, buy one of Cassara's other fine nonfiction works. If you want to see how it could all-too-plausibly play out in real life, buy this one. I strongly recommend it.
Excellent book that brings the issues of money laundering and terrorism/terrorist financing to life in real world situations. The first part of the book is a bit slow, as scenes are set, characters are developed, and AML is explained for those not familiar with it. But once the action starts, it's a spellbinder that kept me up reading past my bedtime. Great job, Mr. Cassara!
The strength of this book was in the richness of its background material. It was educational, somewhat, regarding world affairs. Also, one or two character were fairly well developed, believable and interesting.
The weaknesses are that 1) the protagonist was boring (with a capital B), 2) much time was dedicated to minutia about how the secret service protects clients, 3) similarly with respect to bureaucratic infighting....and a couple more that I withhold comment on.
I skimmed much of the last third of the book because of these faults. The book did not succeed in 'grabbing' me.
Some folks (in the story) are considering doing XXX (avoiding spoiler) and the book did not make me really care.
I would lower my rating to 2 1/2 if I could, but it is better than 2 so I stick with the 3.
